Apeiron Present at SSbD25: Applying SSbD in Early-Stage Biobased Chemical Development

Demonstrating SSbD Principles Across Early Development Stages of Biobased Chemicals

On November 11, 2025, Apeiron and Hiram Moerman will attend the SSbD25 Conference in Zurich, the annual event on Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD).

They will present a poster titled “Critical application of the SSbD framework in a real-life early development of novel chemicals.” The poster illustrates the combined experience from two SSbD-related projects:

  • FONT – a Belgian federal project covering TRL 1–3, focusing on the development of an innovative biobased flame retardant.
  • RADAR – a European innovation action covering TRL 4–6, including three case studies for biobased end products: a coating material, a flame retardant, and a surfactant.

The RADAR project is structured according to the SSbD framework, with dedicated work packages for molecular, process, and product design, as well as hazard and sustainability assessments. Apeiron leads the integration of SSbD principles across the value chain and evaluates challenges during early development stages.

The poster presents a method based on a specific data model, structured around three assessment phases:

  1. Initial phase: Assess the life-cycle knowledge at the start of the development
  2. Development phase: Apply the SSbD concept to steer the choices to be made during development
  3. Final phase: SSbD assessment fit-for-purpose taking into account the maturity level of the development

The two projects include a critical evaluation of the SSbD framework, both the 2024 version and the version recently released for public consultation.
